I finally finished the last of the bag of "low-carb" bagels I accidentally bought. What is this insanity? "Low-carb" bagels? I want carbohydrates in my bagels! This takes the whole low-carb nonsense to a new low. Of course they were the worst-tasting bagels I've ever had, which is what made me notice the "low-carb" tag on the bag in the first place. That'll teach me to look closer when I'm at the store. Normally that brand (Lender's) is the best that can be found in an Ohio supermarket, and it didn't look like there were any other variants (other than the usual flavors) when I chose these. (It's even harder to find good bagels in Canton than it is in Columbus.)

Someone please let me know when I can go to the store and find real food again. It's bad enough that finding veg-friendly food is difficult without making everything from scratch, and I have to sort past the vegetable soup made with beef broth and the beans&rice made with chicken; I can forgive that, for I accept my minority status as a vegetarian. But now I have to sort past all the reduced-carb "food" too?

Did I mention that the low-carb fad is nonsense?

Good bagels could be used as currency.

Isn't there a bagel place in Canton? There has to be one in Akron.

Good luck finding non-sucky food.

Sure, I could go to Einstein Bros. I often do for lunch. But it would get expensive to rely on them for all my bagel. I generally consider the better grocery store bagels a reasonable compromise.

Yeah, I accidentally picked up some low-carb muffins at the store once. I had the same reaction you did. "What the hell? Aren't muffins supposed to have lots of carbs?" Suffice it to say they were horrible.

I am mildly concerned, after reading part of the article you posted, that Atkins' dream of a diet revolution, where high-carb food would be illegal and banned, isn't as crazy a possibility as I might have once thought. But I believe the fatties of this country would all rally as one if someone really tried to take their carbs away. :)

Nah, most people don't care about carbs. They'd only rally as one if someone tried to take their meat and fat away. Thus the popularity of Atkins over vegetarian diets.

BTW, I dislike reduced-fat stuff too. Fats are important.

Hey, I've always wanted to move to California.
If you could persuade [livejournal.com profile] nontacitare, who really likes Ohio autumns and being close to the family, the other major hurdle would be finding jobs for both of us. Mine would be easy, but not hers.

Heh, [livejournal.com profile] nontacitare's brother now lives in L.A., and my mom always loves going to CA (may even be there now, come to think of it), so maybe we could just start moving the whole family out there. :-)

Yeah, I was planning on going to grad school in California a couple of years ago. I, too, have toyed with the idea of moving out there, but convincing Tom would be quite the task.

As for people not loving carbs, what about bagels? Seriously, if full-carb bagels were banned, the outcry from the Jewish population alone would be enough to fuel the movement. And if pasta were banned, the Italians, along with their powerful mafia, would join ranks. I can't think of any other relevant cultural stereotypes right now, but I'll post more when I do. ;)

Ah, thanks, you can singlehandedly make my LJ into a collection of stereotypes. :-)

Heh heh. Well, if you find them too offensive you can always delete them. Though I don't think "Jewish people like bagels" and "Italians like pasta" are going to raise any eyebrows.
