Today was a day of photographic transition for me.

I finally got around to dropping off my last roll of APS film to be developed. I've had my digital camera for about seven months now, and for a while before that I had only been sporadically using my now-obsolete APS camera, so it'll be interesting to see how old some of these pictures are -- and how the undeveloped film held up over time. The guy at the camera shop said that APS is rare enough these days that he had to send my film out for development, and I won't get it back until Friday.

Meanwhile, I bought the photo printer I've had my eye on, the Epson Stylus Photo R320, and tonight I set it up to the point that I can print directly from my camera's memory card. Printing from the computer comes later as a bonus. But now, for snapshots at least, my transition from film to digital is complete. No more hassling with waiting to fill up a roll, then taking it to be developed. Though I'll still keep my all-manual 35mm SLR around for when I want more control and sharpness (and don't mind the bulk).

Soon I'll finish writing about my busy weekend, including how I happened to get this printer.

(LiveJournal as mobile bookmark database!)

My new camera includes a special mode for taking panoramic series photos, to be stitched together later on the computer. And of course it includes Windows software for doing the stitching -- and no Linux software.

But while looking for something totally unrelated, I just came across a couple Linux programs that may help, hugin for putting them together, and enblend for smoothing out the seams. So maybe I'll be able to use the panorama feature of the camera after all.

Late Update: Panorama Tools also looks promising.

Last Monday my latest new toy arrived, a small 5-megapixel digital camera, the result of redeeming an Amazon.com gift certificate.

After a bit of image editing, the best of the results so far.... )

Maybe one of these days I'll get a printer to go with it....

Update: A handy book for tips on various aspects of digital photography is Digital Photography Hacks by Derrick Story.
