Yesterday

Yesterday started with a dream. A rather disturbing and all-too-believable dream that current government policies had finally had their logical outcomes, and American civilization had finally collapsed. And the discovery of this was happening in real-time, that is, around 4-5 in the morning when most people are still asleep but (in the dream) I was inexplicably awake and noticing a surprising number of people also awake, fleeing to wherever people flee to in such situations. I wondered why they couldn't wait until a reasonable time to do so. I also wondered whether I'd attempt to flee to a friend's Michigan farm, or another friend's Canadian island, or someplace else entirely.

At some point the dream ended, with me still dozing but nearly awake. Then [livejournal.com profile] nontacitare turned to me and asked if I knew it was 8:36. (I'm supposed to be at work at 8:30.) I said no, promptly got up and got ready for work as fast as I could, skipping my usual morning shower. (Ick.) Got to work half an hour later.

Oddly enough I was relatively productive at work. Maybe I scared off potential interruptions. I did have a long-overdue conversation with a co-worker there though, which may have actually had some positive results.

When I got home from work, [livejournal.com profile] nontacitare had already had a recent meal and wasn't all that hungry. So I got a Donato's pizza -- thin crust rectangle-cut with (half) hot peppers -- best pizza in Canton, and closest to what you find all over Columbus.

Then we ate the pizza in front of Say Anything, since she had never seen it. I'd forgotten how much I love parts of that movie, from the first scene to the final "ding"; one thing I like (and identify with) is that Lloyd Dobler's best friends are two women (then later he rants at the guys for claiming to be experts on women but hanging out at the Gas'n'Sip on a Saturday night with no women anywhere). Lots of great lines, many of which I identify with.

And of course it's a Cameron Crowe movie, so the music in it is awesome.

So basically my mood started bad and got better.

God I miss Donato's pizza . . . and to tell you the truth I have yet to see all of Say Anything. It is always on TV and I have seen most of it in parts. Maybe I will rent it.

Donato's

What, McDonald's hasn't put a Donato's in Vermont yet? Maybe they'll accept a petition.

Oh, those are the worst dreams. If I'm dreaming about bug-eyed monsters or demon dogs or being chased by the zombie mafia or whatever, I can wake up and a quick glance around the room assures me that everything's all right. But nightmares about social collapse or distant disasters or outbreaks of bizzare diseases? Then I look around the room and think, "But of course, everything would look the same, wouldn't it?" and then I have to get online and check the news feeds before I can go back to sleep.

real disaster

I think the big giveaway for me was that in the dream I was sitting in an early-20th-century sort of house (lots of dark hardwood everywhere) like various houses I've previously live in, rather than a 1950s ranch sort of house like I now live in.

I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.

Exactly.

"What I really want to do with my life - what I want to do for a living - is I want to be with your daughter. I'm good at it."

"But how come it worked? I mean, like, what are you?"
"I'm Lloyd Dobler."

"Then why are you shaking?"
"I don't know. I think I'm happy."

Ding.

On someone’s Livejournal, or maybe it was a community, years ago, someone asked what fictional character would make the best boyfriend ever. Lloyd Dobbler was mentioned in more than one comment.

I think I've always aspired to be Lloyd Dobler without even being conscious of it.

This is an interesting question. I think I'm going to have to think about what fictional character would make my best boy/girl friend. I know who I'm the most attracted to, but that may not be the same thing.

Graham from sex, lies, and videotape is also on my list. So is Adam Rove from the tv show Joan of Arcadia. Girls? Idgie from Fried Green Tomatoes.

I'm quite attracted to Tara from Buffy. Everyone always liked Willow for some reason....
Its hard to compile a list of movie crushes...I tend to be attracted to well...a lot of people. (I'd like to think of it as an ability to see the good in people. lol)
I can say that I really really care for the character of Wolf in the 10th Kingdom. And, he has some fabulous quotes. He definitely embodies the primal male. And, there's another part of me that cares deeply for Seymore from Ghost World.

[identity profile] the-shampoo.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never seen it....suppose I should.

[identity profile] duriyah.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a good movie. Not in my top 10, but definitely a sweet romantic movie.

[identity profile] the-shampoo.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a little weird about romantic movies. Its really got to have a lot going for it. And, its just plain in my nature to deny liking what I perceive to be "girly". Old habits die hard I suppose. You can guarantee that if someone calls it a "chick flick" I will (truthfully or not) claim to hate it. Character flaw I suppose.
But, in private, I have been known to curl up with Dirty Dancing, When Harry Met Sally, Ever After, and Roxanne. Just don't get me to try and admit it... lol

[identity profile] duriyah.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be that way about girly stuff. But once you've started bellydancing, well...there's glitter, and pretties, and cool costumes. The girly kind of sneaks up on you.

I've known guys as well as girls who have liked Say Anything. It isn't as slick as a movie like When Harry Met Sally. It's flawed, but it is sweet. It's very 80's. You might not like it, but it is worth giving a try. Like [livejournal.com profile] rfunk said, it has great lines in it.

[identity profile] the-shampoo.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I like costumes...and I have a special place in my heart (or someplace) for high heeled shoes.

[identity profile] duriyah.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, sometimes I think I'm a dancer for the costumes! You should see my closet. I don't like high heels, but I love love love boots. Sexy boots!

[identity profile] the-shampoo.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Dressing up is killer good fun. Belly dancing sounds awesome. It should in theory run through my blood already, being an Arab....or not. lol
Shoe talk, yay! I am quite a fan. And, it has nothing to do with feet, don't believe anything Rob tells you.

[identity profile] rfunk.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll stay (fairly) quiet and let [livejournal.com profile] staceydc give you a hard time about the feet if she chooses.

[identity profile] the-shampoo.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
lol I've never seen a running gag run so far. But, I figure you must know I don't actually mind. :-)

:(

[identity profile] staceydc.livejournal.com 2006-07-14 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I was all ready to jump in and shout 'FEET' but then everyone jumped in and now it just feels flat. :(

I'll just have to wait for next time. :)

[identity profile] rfunk.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Say Anything has a lot going for it. I don't see it as a "chick flick" at all. I think it's fairly balanced between his and her perspecitives.

[identity profile] nontacitare.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Say Anything" was a fun movie. Things I liked:

-all the '80s nostalgia stuff ;-)
-the innocence of the movie; there were no villians
-the little kid
-Lloyd's ability to have completely asexual friendships with women; they weren't potential sex objects
-the rap scene behind the gas station (the best scene in the whole movie)
-the tenderness and respect of the romance

I did feel really bad for the father, though.
