Last night I was listening to the great Richard & Linda Thompson album Shoot Out The Lights. As the song "Back Street Slide" was drawing to a close, I realized that part of the guitar part in the closing sounded a lot like Led Zeppelin, who I haven't really listened to much since my early years of college. Going by memory, I think it's the song "Kashmir" (from Physical Graffiti) that I'm thinking of.

Though both are British, these are not artists that I would normally associate together. Anyone know both of them, and can tell me whether I'm crazy?

Richard Thompson's been playing *forever*, so it's utterly possible. Fairport Convention basically started the British folk-rock phenomenon in the late 60's, when LZ was starting out... And gods know that LZ has enough Celtic and folk influence in their music. They were moving in the same circles at the time, for what that's worth. But I don't know if they ever played together.

Good points. I sometimes forget that Richard Thompson existed in music before 1980. And when I was listening to Led Zeppelin I was totally unaware of so many of their Celtic and folk (not to mention fantasy) influences and references, since I hadn't gotten much exposure to those elements anywhere else yet.

Dave Pegg who played in FC with Richard Thompson was (is) a friend of several LZ members I think. Robert Plant has been singing at least twice at the Cropredy Festival with Fairport and Richard Thompson was on stage at least one of those times
