Protests

Various forms of protest in the news today....

We have campus atheists doing a porn-for-bibles trade-in. I wonder how many students take a Testament from a campus preacher, then take it straight over to the atheists' booth....

We have Christians protesting the phrase "Happy Holidays" by sending Christmas cards to the ACLU. I'm sure this outpouring of Christmas cheer will have the ACLU quaking in their boots.

And finally, we have Hillary Clinton continuing her efforts to make liberals hate her as much as conservatives already do, by co-sponsoring legislation to criminalize flag desecration.

Personally, I find the "Merry Christmas" protests highly amusing. May the Lord and Lady bless their endeavor.

As for Hillary Clinton, I think she's been a horrible senator. Before her husband was elected President for the first time, I was thinking I'd rather have her than Bill. Now I don't even want her to run in the Democratic primaries.

Hehe. Funny, I remember that the conservatives believed that we did have Hillary instead of Bill. . .

I'm a bit surprised that [livejournal.com profile] rfunk didn't mention last week's introduction of a computer gaming bill by Sens. Clinton and Leiberman. . .

Hillary and Joe

If I noted every time Hillary did something to try to "move to the middle", I'd never have a chance to talk about anything else.

And the less said about Lieberman, the better.

Really? Lieberman has fallen from favour? I remember much excitement about him in 2000. In fact, I was thinking that he sounded like the best thing since sliced bread, from what I was hearing from most of my liberal-leaning friends (who are, of course, most of my friends).

Don't know what friends you were listening to. I was never crazy about him. You might be thinking of Al Gore.

Joe-mentum has been the reliable go-to guy whenever the Bushies needed to come up with "bipartisan support" for one of their harebrained schemes.

Perhaps I was merely thinking of the "package deal" that people seemed so excited about. "Buy one ex-Vice President, get a Orthodox Jewish Senator from Connecticut free!"

(Side note: Why is it that we Americans so often seem to think about our politicians in terms of buying at a great value? "Best Congress money can buy!" is another good one. . .)

But yeah, I always thought that the Dems were generally excited about him. They certainly seemed to talk him up, and talk about the history he was making, and all that jazz. Hell, they must have been excited! Why else would you pick a guy to run as VP?

Then again, they did run Kerry in 2004. No one really seemed excited for that choice.

Then again, I'm still terribly confused why people were crazy about Gore. I liked him, perhaps, less than I liked Clinton. . . Though I can't honestly say why.

Hey, Gore is the one who picked him. The rest of us just had to go along with it.

Well, if nothing else, 2000 was a long time ago. And picking a single candidate that makes everybody excited and happy (even on one side of the aisle) is impossible. I still don't know why people insist on only voting for someone if that person excites them.

I think that they hope that their politician will reflect them. They want someone that they can really admire and trust. . .

Which is why people wanted a Democrat to be excited about, I think. They didn't want to have to vote against someone. They wanted to vote for someone. I certainly wanted to vote for someone. I wonder if I did?

Just because there are no candidates that can excite everyone doesn't mean that the voter has to give up the dream of being excited, I think.

Best Congress money can buy

Oh yeah, the "great value" part is usually a half-joke stemming from the fact that by and large our politicians are in the service of big money interests rather than their constituents.

It bothers me that the smut for bibles campaign is directed at the Gideons.

I'd have a much different opinoin of it, I think, if it were directed at Brother Jed.

[identity profile] rfunk.livejournal.com 2005-12-06 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they'll take any bibles, not just Gideons...

[identity profile] chronarchy.livejournal.com 2005-12-06 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The story I read (I suspect I should try googling for it when I have the chance) indicated that it was done specifically in response to the Gideon presence at the school. Gotta go lookin'. . .

News

[identity profile] staceydc.livejournal.com 2005-12-06 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
See, this is the reason why I don't read the news. Does any of those articles make sense? I'm referring to the reasons behind them. The only one that makes some sense to me is the Christians sending Christmas cards because it appears to me as a passive form of protest.

*chuckles* And on that note I think I am going to head to the post office and send out the rest of my holiday cards. (How's that for a segue?)

Re: News

[identity profile] rfunk.livejournal.com 2005-12-06 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, they weren't actually in the usual news... I found two on Pandagon (which is on my friends page as [livejournal.com profile] pandagon_net) and one on Daily Kos. But it's part of my news.

And the fact that they don't make sense is why I find them amusing. And even newsworthy, in my world.

Turns out the first link goes to a site for news of the porn industry. Didn't even know there was such a site, but it makes sense that there is.

Political Rantings

[identity profile] the-shampoo.livejournal.com 2005-12-06 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess this goes without saying but, I thought porn for Bibles sounded like the best idea...ever. I wish I had more Bibles to trade in.
Also, I don't know how other people feel about it, but I'm a fan of "Happy Holidays"....on the other hand, I might be more sensative about it having not been raised Christian.

And, on the topic of Hilary...(sigh)...I'm so ready for a female President, and it sucks that the first time we have a candidate that could be in the running, she's a total dick. And, she's trying to play to the Right far too much. It is my belief that there is noooooo way she could possible win a presidential election because no conservative likes her, and quite a few liberals feel the same way. In fact, I doubt that she'd win a nomination, its just too risky.
I liked Gore more than Bush, but his stance on sensorship was scary.
Lieberman is the most republican "democrat" I've ever seen. Don't get me wrong, I think (having seen and heard him speak many times) that he is a very intelligent and reasonable person. However, he is hardly a liberal.
And, I don't want to completely discredit myself, but.....I was a big Bill Clinton fan. It probably doesn't have anything to do with his record. More likely it was the fact that I found him charasmatic and kind of charming. Sick huh?

Oh, here's my final political statement. I am pissed at America for giving up on Howard Dean so quickly. Though I actually prefered Dennis Kucinich, Dean was my second runner up.

I think most of us are. It just seems like common sense and courtesy. Personally, though, I do find it amusing that some are offended by the phrase "Happy Holidays."
