Favorite Podcasts (so far)
I've now been listening to some podcasts for about a month, and I've found some great stuff, some of which I've already mentioned.
My favorites have personality along with the music, without overwhelming the music. Most are half an hour to an hour long, while a few are just a single song at a time. Some do one show a week, some two or three a week. The ones that have become my favorites are (in approximate order):
Insomnia Radio - Good mix of music and talk about the music by Jason Evangelho. Pushing my longtime favorites Manda and the Marbles on the world is also a great way to win points with me. Introduced me to Jonathan Coulton.
Coverville - Cover songs, of course. Introduced me to Damone, their great cover of the Cars' "Just What I needed", and the Cars tribute album it comes from.
Celtic Music News Podcast - "Mainly the more rocking kind" (my favorite kind) of Celtic music, though there's some occasional quieter stuff too. Introduced me to The Donegal X-Press.
BandTrax - Somewhat similar type of playlist as Insomnia Radio, but much more of a slick and scripted sound. Improved! Casual and unscripted! Also varying the genres quite a bit.
Vinyl Podcast - Every show is a single song from some out-of-print record, with a couple minutes of informative introduction. Usually some 60s-70s genre I don't normally listen to but still sounds cool as a change of pace; he says he'll try a batch of early-90s indie rock soon though, before going back to the older stuff. Maybe I'll actually hear something I know or even have in my own collection....
IndieFeed Alt/Modern Rock Channel - An occasional one-song shot of (usually) good music, including some crossover with Insomnia Radio. This is one of six IndieFeed genre channels. Introduced me to Popjoy.
DoneWaiting.com Disposable Radio Show - Columbus-based show that covers music from Columbus and the rest of the world. I haven't heard enough of this show for the music to make a big impression, but I've heard some familiar names, and someone I went to middle school with (and is now music editor for Columbus Alive) was a guest on one show.
Many of these have recently banded together to form the Association of Music Podcasting, so now I'm going to check out the other members of that group.
Plus every weekend I get the non-music NPR show
On The Media, which is always fun and interesting.
There's lots of software out there for getting podcasts, but most of it isn't written for Linux/Unix, and what is generally started out on Mac OS X. For now I'm using a heavily-customized copy of "get_enclosures", and every morning I copy the fresh downloads to my 128MB USB flash drive to take to work and listen on my computer there. At some point I'll work on the program (or another one) to improve the process.
I have decided, however, that CDs are a bit unwieldy for this purpose (too slow to burn, making me late for work), causing me to somewhat rethink my plans for a CD-MP3 player in the car. (I still want one, but somehow I'd like it to support flash memory too. I haven't figured out how.)
Update: I haven't listened to it yet, but
The Dragon Page ("Literary Concepts in Fantasy and Sci-Fi") looks like something a lot of my friends might enjoy. They also have a nice nontechnical introduction to podcast listening for the uninitiated.
Update 2: AP just put out a story on podcasting. Also, I forgot to mention BandTrax earlier, so that's now on the list.
