  • 11:47 managed to get Sprint tech support to believe my caller ID problem & maybe fix it, but they say it'll take days for the fix to take effect. #
  • 12:02 had to read comments to get the joke in xkcd today. Apparently I fail at general sexual relativity. xkcd.com/514/ #
  • 18:08 not looking forward to more work on the server disk. Might've been nice if it had waited another two months. #
  • 19:40 discovered that my car's blue book value is substantially higher than what the insurance company offered. Hmmm..... #

Ever wondered what happens in a cartooning duel? Yeah, me either.
The Rules -- each contender is to draw:
* The Internet, as envisioned by the elderly.
* String Theory.
* 1999.
* Your favorite animal eating your favorite food.

The results are amusing. My favorite is the XKCD version of string theory (complete with Brian Greene attempting a Calabi-Yau knot), though the fact that he "pulled a Palin" on the last one is great too. (There's also a small interview with Randall, with some great lines.)

Oh yeah, and you may also be interested in watching Randall's talk at Google last year.

Thanks to comments on the latest XKCD, I now know about Can't Stop the Serenity, a project to raise money for Equality Now with showings of Serenity everywhere.

Supposedly there's one in Columbus at Studio 35 on Sunday, but so far the website only mentions Rocky Horror ("Next show May 3!"). A bunch of cities (even Dayton Yellow Springs) have showings on Saturday too.

It's been a while since I've done a real update, and now I have a collection of geeky stuff to share....

A couple weekends ago I went to the fifth Ohio LinuxFest. Read more... )

One of the booths at OLF was promoting Penguicon, a "Science Fiction and Open Source Software Convention" held every April in a suburb of Detroit. I've thought about going before, but next year Randall Munroe of XKCD fame will be there, so we might have to go.

By the way, I wore my XKCD regular expressions t-shirt to OLF, and got many approving comments. Then I wore it to a bellydance dinner performance that night and discovered one other person in the room who claimed to know regular expressions. (He said his name was Ken, but I neglected to ask him if his last name was Thompson.)

Today [livejournal.com profile] coding_horror talks about geek exercise, including gadgets for exercising while programming or gaming.

Also today, [livejournal.com profile] ah_graylensman points out that people are working on LOLCODE, a programming language in which you say things like "HAI" and "KTHXBYE" instead of "begin" and "end".

Finally, after growing up watching my dad build things with them all the time, I now have my own (power, compound) miter saw. And for geek points, apparently they all have laser targeting guides these days.

Now if only the motion-sensitive light switch we bought for the kitchen worked properly with the fluorescent lights in there.....
