I just watched the first episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer season eight. Well, OK, I just read the first issue of it -- it's being done as a comic book.

The art is pretty good. The writing (by Joss this time) is better than most of his season-openers. Of course, it suffers from my biggest problem with comic books: one issue is too short to get into very well. It's like watching maybe 15 minutes on TV. So it's probably worth waiting for the bound graphic novel.

Buffy has never been my favorite character, and now that there's an army of slayers (not to mention an artist rather than a camera) she doesn't even stand out from the others very much anymore. Sadly, Willow is mentioned but not yet seen; same with Giles and Andrew. But an old friend of Willow's is shaping up to be the first major antagonist.

Since it's Joss, there are at least a couple of good lines in there. Such as:
Buffy: "Went Okay. 'Cept I feel a little weird about using a crucifix to kill someone."
Scottish Slayer: "Yeh dinno much about religion, do yeh?"
Buffy: "I miss the gang. And Churros. And sex. Great Muppety Odin, I miss that sex."

Oh yeah, and apparently there will be a second comic book series of Serenity. (You have read the first one, haven't you? The one that takes place between Firefly and the movie?)

There's a Serenity comic series?

Crap.

*crumples*

Okay, I give. I'll try it.

Just call me the "Mikey" of comic books. Maybe it'll be my Life.

[Hmm, did LJ eat my first attempt at this comment?]

I thought I'd told you about that Serenity book before....

I suppose if JMS ("Rising Stars") and Gaiman ("Sandman") could get me into comics, Joss might be able to do the same for you with Serenity.

I'm not holding my breath though. ;-)

Yes. I think that's been happening to people recently. Not me so far yet.

I don't remember you telling me about it. I could have blocked it out though...

The cover looks very comic-booky. *makes face* But for the Serenity crew, I'll make a sincere and concerted effort to read it.

Ooh, I didn't know about the Serenity series either. Must check it out, after papers are finished...

I got my copy of the first "episode" of season 8 last week. I squeed and giggled so much, I think I weirded out my kids.

Weirding out the kids by getting excited over a comic book just seems so right somehow.
