Has she seen this version, or was this some prejudice against changing character gender?

I knew nothing of the play before last week, so I can only guess at the changed character, and if it's who I'm guessing then the actress played the part wonderfully.

There were some minor soldier characters that were probably originally supposed to be men and were played by women, but they were played sort of asexually.
