I'm so with you on all this (except the local level which luckily we don't have). I've never actually had any problems in the past (I use turbo tax) even with Ed and I both filing schedule Cs for self employment. The real headache this year was incorporating, but having all our income on one 1099 (so instead of one for the DBA from Jan-July and one for the corporation July-Dec). Needless to say I filed extensions because I have a nagging suspicion that a note saying "the reason I am claiming half of what my 1099s say . . .) is just asking for an audit. So, for the first year I'm afraid we need to go to an accountant. For me, it is a little about control and also about the secrecy of money. In my family we just didn't talk about it, and I am embarrassed to have someone see what we made and what we spent. But, I've resigned myself to just drinking the cool-aid . . .
