CD/media shelf done!
Eleven months after I started, I've finally finished my CD/media shelf project. When I last mentioned it, the shelves were fastened together but the back wasn't there.
Yesterday I cut pieces of plywood to fit the back. I used a table saw for this, and learned that I really needed a handheld power saw. Oh well, I figured I could trim the errors later with the Dremel. Then I nailed the plywood to the back, including to the individual shelves. Finally I nailed another cedar board (amazingly a scrap that was just the right size, with no cutting required) to the bottom as a base platform.
I brought it inside last night, then today I got out the Dremel and ground down a wayward screw as well as some plywood edges. Finally I pulled my CDs out of boxes and loaded up the shelves. They filled up the whole thing just about perfectly. I estimate around 985 CDs on there. I probably should get rid of a few CDs..... and in this era of the CD format dying, the shelves will also be perfect for DVD-sized cases. Or paperbacks. And the top shelf is big enough for oversized VHS cases (think Disney clamshells), if those keep hanging around.
The only problem is that with the CDs on it, the whole unit is a bit unbalanced, and needs to be leaned a few (~3.5) degrees back against the wall in order not to fall forward; it sits more than 4 inches away from the wall at the bottom, and touches the wall at the top. And it should probably be stained, but that can wait. (
duriyah wants to paint it white, but I hate the idea of covering the grain of the wood.) And no, I'm not eager to do another one of these anytime soon.
